The Business Intelligence Development Studio or BIDS, is the development platform for SSIS packages. With the SQL Server 2005 release, BI development has been separated from DBA administrations. BIDS is the BI tool, and SSMS is the DBA tool. Visual Studio 2005, and BIDS are exactly the same shell or IDE. When you install BIDS during setup you are really installing the Visual Studio shell. What differs from the full Visual Studio product is the packages installed, as seen by the project types available.
